Ramblings, just ramblings
The new *new* coke?

So, I ran out and pre-ordered Final Fantasy XI back in August of last year. I had jsut gone through a terrible breakup with EverQuest a few months before. I wasn't sure if I was ready to get into another long term commitment, but crap people, it's FINAL FANTASY. After rangling with the credit card, I waited the two hours to allow the new release patch to download. Soon, I was slaying bunnies with my uber sweet Elvaan female on Ramuh server. And for awhile, I felt at home. Now, it is the month of July, in the next year, and I find that FFXI is a hollow experience. First, let me get it straight off, the PATCHING NEVER ENDS. If it isn't a registration server issue (which repeatedly kicked me off even with a clean, 0 balance credit card), the game jsut needed so much work. The social aspect was enough to keep me there for awhile, but as a friend said " Final Fantasy XI is jsut EverQuest with fewer things to do" Is this true? It might be. But, you see, EverQuest has had so much time to grow and develope. Will Final Fantasy come close? I don't know. The world wide fan base of the RPG epic is huge. We are talking Orca huge. Maybe it's partly a fact that S-E doesn't care about its gamers. Leveling down, restrictive monthy fees......16 hour server maintenance. Christ, the game was out in Japan for what, a year and a half? You would think the issues would be worked out by the NA release. Let's talk about a couple of other aspects. One of the things that grabbed me was the fact that you are not, as a character, cast into the single class for the game. I started as a monk, then switched later because monks aren't appreciated. It beats starting a new character, and new Content ID from scratch...but wait. There is more. You are the same character. The problem is that if you get a bad reputation as one character, one class, that doesn't go away. I have been in a Linkshell where the leader of that linkshell has been practically banned from grouping with much of the server. How is that for horrible? So, while you can play any class you want, except the lv 30 ones, you have to live with all your mistakes. Leveling down...need I say more. Final Fantasy is a beautiful game. The fact that I loved the graphics so much I dropped good money on a good video card should prove it. But, graphics alone aren't enough. While some of the level content is being addressed, the difficulty of some of the added stuff is brutal. So, I closed off FFXI until the expansion, Chains of Promethia. Maybe it will be better, with a lot more to do. I lvl grinded in EQ for almost 5 years, and I am disillusioned with doing it again. For those of you that want to try it, by all means, do it. But keep in mind the issues I have said or the issues that have been said by others. It is worth trying after all. But maybe for the PS2 where you don't have to beef up the system to play.

You hit the nail on the head on this one. It does have alot of neat features, but overall it just isnt well rounded enough yet. I found myself unable to find a group, and disliked that i couldn't really effectively solo. I dropped it pretty quick but have been thinking about going back,.

I like Final Fantasy XI more than Everquest, mainly for the fact that I actually see people around me all the time. I don't feel so isolated. However, I'm new to MMORPGs, so I still have plenty of time to get bored out of my mind with them.

Oh, it is so much better in a lot of asspects, but the short-comings are all too prelevant. Hell, every other gaming MMORPG got rid of Leveling Down, for instance, why not FFXI? These are things to consider. I played hardcore for 8 months..amd then the lvl grind started.... and it jsut lost interest..I don't know..ultimately, it's every individual's call, right?

played the game from release till now, everything that this poster's said is exagerrated.

i can totally vouch for this, that there has never been a 16 hour downtime in the game.

the most was 8 hours, and it was because of adding in BEEFY chockful of content.

and on top of that new features are added almost on a monthly basis.

As for saying that S-E doesnt give a crap about customers, a number of features added on those patches are mostly user suggested, from the locked camera, all the way to class balancing.

leveling down wasnt removed from teh game, because its definitely part of the experience.

then again, i like my games challenging, and rewarding.

Yes, I exaggerated. 16 hours was a bit of a overthrow, but April's 10.5 hour patch wasn't.
And if I exaggerated, I suppose the good things I said were too, then?

The content added was to attract back a lot of the Japanese players that started dropping off. The number of times I have taken part in Garrison, or BCNM 40 and died, is a huge number. Not because I was no good, but because other people don't know what they were doing. Maybe, to be a little honest, my beef so much isn't with FFXI in particular, but people that play in it. Not to pinpoint too badly, but the PS2 players and people that picked it up expecting something else was a big hit to the game play mechanics.

The point I was trying to make, FFxigamer was that the game is unbalanced. It is the best alternative out there right now, considering that rest that you have to pick from. I mean, City of Heroes? pluuueeeaaasssseeee.....
Adding more content for players in the for of BCNMs and such isn't adding too much, if you think about it. I have every confidence that S-E will win people back with CoP, and I will be one of them, regardless of no new lvl cap, classes, or independant transport outside of Chocobos.
I appareciate your feedback. In the future, I will try to be clearer.

Final Fantasy XI is my first MMORPG, as such I found myself both stunned, amazed, and in love with the concept of playing with REAL characters. As the original poster mentioned, the reality of the people factor CAN be less than fantasy, and sometimes very final. But just like the real world, I am amazed at the depth of character within humanity. Many of the people in Vana'Diel are amazingly generous and caring. It is unfortunate that in general the bad impressions are the ones which stay with us.
Final Fantasy XI is a beautiful game, stunning in vivid hues and crisp detail, I can't compare the mechanics to other MMORPG's, however once the user gets there head around the macros and controls it proves to have an easy flow to it. I must admit that after playing for a month I have lost some of my initial passion, and certainly the monthly fee is painful, I guess the question is whether it is worth it for you, I think it is for me. While there are many profane newbies running around letting there pubescent rage out in online anonymity, It is still an excellent game and a wonderful environment to stay in awhile. Of course it sucks when our fantasy world, our little realm of escapism is invaded by some real world negative elements, but in many ways it makes the experience all the more 'real', Taking the good with the bad and finding pleasure in the small things that keep us smiling instead of crying.

wow, I really liked that post, the one above.

It is a beautiful game, especially after the dredges of EQ and SWG...but the human factor can get a little much. As a true fanboy, I actually logged back in and updated this morning before work, and found that I profoundly missed the people I did like, and my character * 43 Bard*.
Maybe I was a little hard on the game out of frustration, but with a busy writing schedule, I won't be back until the expansion. Maybe after 89 months I jsut needed a break.
