Villians Galour!
Published on July 24, 2004 By Amitty In Movies & TV & Books
There was a interesting blog about possible Villians for Spiderman 3. Since the questions were asked before the new movie was out, I figured it will be cool to look back and figure out what might happen by re-examining the characters.

The Hobgoblin. It has been a long time since I have picked up a Spiderman comic book, but I was sure that the Hobgoblin was no way related to the Green Goblin, which, he wasn't. Check out the link:

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Hobgoblin%20(Spiderman%20Villain)

But, in movie land, they do a lot of different things. I think it made sense to make Harry the Hobgoblin. And, after the buildup, how could they not? This isn't a gray area like X-3.

Venom / Carnage : For the fans of Spiderman, it is impossible to forget Eddie Brock and the suit of death. The history of the Symbiot suit and the secret wars, including some other stuff can be found here:

Carnage, on the other hand, can't really be introduced without Venom coming out. After all, where did Carnage get his symbiot? Why, from the original one. The storyline is fuzzy to me, so I looked it up on the Net. Strangely, I can't find a good link like the one's above.

The fact that these two would be a majorly unlikely pair for opening the movie. But, I have added some links that talk about what little is known.

The first site is amazing, since it details waht has been told nicely. IT would be a shame to see the Lizard as the villian, but that might have to be how it is. I wasn't impressed with Doctor Oct. either, until I saw the movie.

The third link is a site that I have gone to for all my comic information regarding movies that were comic book licenses. There is a huge amount of stuff there, including that someone let it slip that the spiderman movies are only a trilogy. But, it's best for you all to check them out and see for yourself.

Personally, I would love to see Venom. I was a huge fan, and even wadded throught the crap series where he tried to be a good guy. The art, of course, MacFarland, can't argue, but the premise was meh. Carnage rubbed me the wrong way, and the rest of the villains are so so. I guess, we will all just have to keep tapping the internet for rumors and bits that they throw us.

So, what do YOU want to see in the Spiderman movies?

It makes sense for Harry to be the next villian, but he doesn't have to become the Hobgoblin. In the comics, he became the Green Goblin (II). Check this link for more info Link. They may make in the Hobgobling, anyway, because you are right in the respect that movies do what they want.

I don't know that we'll ever see Venom. He'd make a great villian, but you'd almost need an entire movie to set up the symbiot and another to see Venom/Brock.

You can also get more info on Carnage from the site above or here: Link.

As for what I'd like to see... I think I'd like to see Kraven in a future movie installment. I think he'd be a lot of fun in a movie.

Thank you Chiprj, I'll check them out and include in a update for the future.

I have a old graphic novel that I pulled from the closet that features Kraven in a story arc I forgot all about. I'll have to read it, people seem to like this guy!

Side Note: For Spidey Fans, my friend found this awesome site: http://www.spiderfan.org

Yeah, impossible to get the sym. in one movie... especially if they want to follow the true story...

If they follow the cartoon version... possible if spidey loses the sym. in 30 mins. and brock gets it. If you want the movie to fit within the usual 2 hour slot.

And it's awkward to have sequals change so much in time after the first two are so close....
so a three hour spidey three... maybe catchy, but not something to advertise, so I don't see that happening unless they expect people to come back like for matrix 3... ouch, still haven't seen that one. should have seen it at 1.50, half the price of a rent.

Anyway... yeah lizard is a no go... too general a character, however in Spidey 1 : the movie : the game, the scorp. was in there, and the game made it painfully obvious he would appear again only not in that game, it maybe interesting to see him in a movie, the suit rocked... but the character is too generalized, and I think the later appearance would stay within the game realm... he BETTER show up again.... because that would be odd.... kinda like dropping wolverine in the second X-men movie.

hmm... hobgoblin, very possible.
According to comic, hobgob was a university kid who took a liking to greengob. and so made himself an alternate version with a smaller glider. This would work, you could throw him and greengob in there, because greengob doesn't like hobgob on the scene... I could see this fitting within the time frame, and setting itself apart from SM1

You don't want 3 to be too much like 1... so throwing in hobgob and having a three way duel like in the comic, would be sweet

I just want to see him and Daredevil team up.

BAM!!!
on Jul 25, 2004
Good idea Muggaz, they have teamed up before and they both have similar powers.  Well if the second one was any indication Hobgoblin will be the new villain but I hope they have Spiderman donning the symbiote suit for at least some part of the movie.  They already have J Jonah Jameson's son the astronaut in the movie so all it will take is for the symbiote suit to be brought back in the space shuttle.  It could be at the start of the movie where spiderman saves him from the space shuttle (like in the cartoons) and then for half the movie he battles hobgoblin with the black suit and at the very end he gets rid of the suit and you see it go after Brock who is also introduced in the third one and it eludes to him being the villain in the 4th one.  Whew that's a lot of speculation.

Well, they could be building up the new Green Goblin/Hobgobline storyline like they did at the end of X-2. We saw the flash of the phoenix, and then we get bombardered with news that The Phoenix saga is indeed the subject of the fourth movie. But, that was mainly because they are trying to finish up the Wolverine story Arc. BUT. Spiderman doesn't have multiple heros and therefore, more or less, mysterious.
And as far as Daredevil, not being a fan of the movie, I don't think we will see him and spidey team up, as much as it might be cool. They will consider what box office draw he would have being put in a Spidey movie. Still good call tho Muggaz

When I find out more, I'll keep you all informed.

Overheard at the comic store: Affleck has removed himself from any Daredevil connection, even turning down a cameo in an upcoming Elektra movie. The next Daredevil (if it gets made) will be a "born again" storyline.

The largest problem for teaming them up in a film would be that Fox has Daredevil movie rights and Sony has Spider-Man.

That's a good call all around, IMHO. I just didn't enjoy him as DD. I did think Jennifer Garner was OK as Elektra. I was 'eh' for Kingpin. But I thought Colin Farril was outstanding as Bullseye.

Did you see the gag reel on the X-Men DVD? I loved where 'Spider-Man' came running into one of the scenes! That's probably as close as we'll ever see to a crossover movie for a while, though.

on Jul 26, 2004
The thing is, when a comic book sale started to sag, they brought in the crossover. Popular characters from the others places in the universe showed up and a new story was born. The Success of Spiderman and the X-men will carry them along for a long time. There will be no need to add other characters.

Daredevil...dude, what can you say? It was bad. I don't blame Affleck from walking away from future devel. The movie, along with the Hulk, were jsut not strong enough. Daredevil, in the comic world, was at his best when he showed up as a guest character. On his own, he can't carry a movie. * At least with Affleck*
And I don't think I will be lining up for Electra either. Jennifer Garner and the character don't scream " Must see!" to me.

They badly need to inject 2 or more baddies in the next installment.
I found the first 2 movies very lacking in depth in regards to the baddy, almost yawnable.

Give us a real baddy like Venom and a medum baddy like Lizard as the villian.

The movies are bluckbusters yet they need a better punch viliand wise next time.
