Ramblings, just ramblings
Will you be there?

In the early days, director Tim Burton brought one of the most famous comic book heros from the depths the comic book world and presented him to us in a dark, interesting manner. Batman, the blockbuster of 89, revitalized the aging franchise and brought it to millions of people around the globe.

The Batman movie grossed 251 Million since that summer of madness. And why not? Not only was the movie well done, but you could hardly go wrong with Jack Nicholson as the Joker. In my own opinion, he stole the show. The franchise was ready to go on the up and up. Hell, it's opening weekend was 45 Million, which is nothing compared to our Spidermans and Harry Potters, but back then, Theater movies were rarely raking in that kind of money.

Batman Returns, released in June of 92, was also a great movie. With the introduction of the Penguin, played by Danny DeVito, and the immeasurable Catwoman played by Michelle Pfeiffer, the movie continued to be directed by Tim Burton, and held to the darker version that most of the fans knew and loved. Hell, the comic book never had any disillusions of what Gotham city was... it was a dark, 20's kind of town, film noire style without the black and white.
The US gross on this movie was a lot less. People didn't respond to it. It's total domestic gross was 162 Million and some change.

Then, the terror stuck. Batman Returns. The mega cast movie, and Jim Carrey's first 20 million pic. It had a strange feel to it, might have had something to do with the directorial change. Joel Schumacher took over the helm and changed it, more hollywood-ized it. The floruescents, the camp...it was a little too much for me. We also have the introduction of Chris O'Donnel as the whiny, rebel wanna be Robin. There were so many things about this movie that I liked and didn't like. It gorssed 184 Million, far short of the projected gross, I might add.

Batman and Robin. Total Gross: 107 Million. This one just sucked. Do I need to go into it?

Now, 7 years after the last movie, we have Batman Begins. Ardent Batman fans are waiting for every little teaser or pic that shows them what the lastest creation. So far the cast looks good. We have Christian Bale taking ht elead from George Clooney, we have Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and more. Check it out at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372784/

The new Batmoblie was introduced in Las Vegas last month, and to me, it looks like a vechical belonging in Mad Max. It looks like a armor-plated dune buggy. With Principle shooting done, and only editing, reshoots, and CGI inclusion, the movie is set for release sometime in 2005.
The villians of this movie will be a lot different from all the others. The plot synopisis is that this movie will tell a in-depth look at the making of the superhero we know today. We follow Bruce Wayne in his training and to avenge the death of his parents. We are introduced to the man that trained by (Ken Watanabe) and the introduction of a old Batman villian, the Scarecrow.

Fans on the message boards are already angry.

Christoper Nolan, most notably praised for his work directing the hit movie Momento, does not have a lot of big movie experience. " My goal is to bring back the dark Batman and really get to the root." Whether he has the ability to do that has yet to be seen.

What villians could have been introduced without killing the original movie storylines. " None," Nolan replies. " I want people to forget about the past movies, and give this movie a fresh chance." Considering it is subtitled Batman 5, people might have issues.

Will Christian Bale make a good Batman? What other characters could they have introduced? What does the public want? Stay tuned, same Bat time, same Bat Channel.

"My goal is to bring back the dark Batman and really get to the root."

That would be a really good thing. Conflicted heroes are so much more interesting.

"Considering it is subtitled Batman 5"

Bleh....

I thought Bale's John Preston in Equilibrium was a fine precursor for the tormented Wayne. Bale has the intensity that the role demands, and as the Director of Equilibrium pointed out, his dance background makes him very suitable for the physical aspects of such a movie.

I look forward to this flick.

Hey, I hate to be plebian about it, but I have two demands:

  1. NO NIPPLES

  2. NO CODPIECES

I cannot, will not, tolerate another homoerotic batman gayfest. No offense intended to homosexuals, but dammit superheroes walk a find line as it is in leotards with their underwear on the outside. Any more than that and it is Fire Island in June...

I think if he goes back to the Burton mold, rejects all the technicolor neon, the aforementioned gaities, and actually puts some style into the production it will work. I have a lot more faith in this new director, simply because he isn't Joel Schumacher. As long as he doesn't need a Broadway choreographer and nothing ends up too abysmally phallic, I think he can't do a worse job.

Well, from all reports, Baker, you will be happy about it. There are no tight-wearing, colorful villians. It actually looks fairly gritty, or as gritty as you can with a Batman movie. The initiative is to get back to Batman, not just another action flick, which is where it started to go with the last couple of movies. Really, even with the numbers posted, the movies did good. It is all in the name, right?

I agree with CSguy that I want to see it, especially since the work that went into it. I loved the Tim Burton films, and was disappointed that he wasn't asked back for the sequels past 2.

Fans on message boards are already angry? Really? What boards? I've heard nothing but raves about the script, cast, shoot, etc. from sites like Aint It Cool News, Coming Soon, Coming Attractions, Super Hero Hype, etc. (I could go on).

Also, I haven't seen anything that has this movie subtitled Batman 5. In an interview with Chris Nolan he talks specifically about why they chose to call it BEGINS to make sure everyone knows to ignore the first 4 movies. He commented that he wanted to "reboot" the franchise. This isn't Batman 5. This is Batman 1. And so far, the word of mouth is incredibly positive and the fans are very excited about the direction of the Batman series (with the exception of knowing the franchise still belongs to WB).

More than anything, this film is heavily influenced by Frank Miller's Batman Year One, about the origin of Batman.
on Jul 27, 2004
The production title is Batman 5.

As far as fans, maybe it's because I visit a lot of IRC rooms and rely on personal word of mouth, but I have heard and read a bunch of people question the villians of this movie. There are a lot of people that expected to see what we have already been subjected to... Little content, flashy story. Now, regardless of fandom on this one, people say what they feel. I myself went to the pages above, and read what people had to say, and I agree wit ha lot of it. It looks like a good movie, though I do question Christian Bale in some respects, probably a American Pyscho holdover..

Sounds like the IRC rooms have bad information. Or maybe they're just the same people who post in the talkbacks on AICN.

I'll stick to the insiders I've followed for years and who have proved to be pretty reliable. I haven't seen Batman 5 on anything official either. That may be a WB thing, but Nolan clearly wants it known that this is a NEW Batman, not a continuation of the series Schumacher ruined. I'm really looking forward to this movie and it seems so are all the insiders.

Doh! Saw some bad press on Batman recently.

The word is the Comic-Con panel was a major letdown. All the fans were disappointed that they didn't show up with 'the goods.' No video, no stills, not even Bats himself. That stinks. But there are rumors flying all over that we will be seeing a teaser soon (I've read a shot for shot description of the teaser. If that was indeed the teaser, it sounds pretty cool).
on Jul 28, 2004
Well, looks like the shot for shot description I read was accurate. See it for yourself... http://batmanbegins.warnerbros.com/
Sets the mood/tone for the movie nicely. Let's see what fan reaction to this is.

you were right, it's a WB moniker, nnot Nolan's, but since it is WB that is fronting the cash and making hte movie, it's Batman 5. The director has little to say really.

I also read some bad press on the Comic-con panel. It's a shame that such a anticipated movie franchise revival would be leaving out it's core base.
