A long time ago, George A. Romero made three movies about what might happen when a meteroite hit the earth. These three classis movies were Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. These movies are classics in my own mind and in the minds of various other movie buffs.
With the re-interest in movies that include Zombies, these including 28 Days Later, Resident Evil, the Remake of Dawn of the Dead, and the cult film Shaun of the Dead, Romero has decided to make the last of his zombie movies, Land of the Dead.
The move Land has a interesting cast, two of the members being John Leguizamo (Spawn) and Dennis Hopper (best known for Speed).
The plot is simple: The zombies have taken over the earth. Now that this has happened, they begin to develope society, there being a monarchy for some reason. The humans that aren't basically have to escape. IT sounds a little like a zombie Planet of the Apes, doesn't it? The humans that remain un-zombied live in a walled in city that keeps the baddies out.
While the Director himself declares that the movies are not literal, but sublimminal and about the story he wants to get across, the movie was a hit with fans all over the world, with Dawn making jsut over $40 Million when it originally appeared in theaters. The original movie cost $140,000 and grossed over $20 million. Big numbers when it comes to the studios. Land is expected to budget out for $80 million.
The first remake of the series, Dawn of the Dead that arrived in 2004, had grossed 58 Million domestic, and 96 million overseas. 28 Days later took $15 million, and grossed $45 million. The numbers shows that it is a good time for Romero to come out of retirement.
